The last interview that I did went so well that I thought that I might as well do another. I guess that’s one of the fun parts about having a blog is that you get to research things and talk to people that you find interesting!
Ben Ellsworth sat down with me to talk about his career. Ben has a strong history in sales, a history of involvement with the Boise Chamber of Commerce and has received training as a Life Coach. Ben currently works for Merchants Moving and Storage where he assists businesses looking to relocate to Boise. As someone who has lived in Boise for 42 of his 45 years he is uniquely positioned to do so. Ben talks about how this town has changed but how there’s still a lot where it’s all about who you know. Ben is a big believer in the power of networking and says that he’s often been in the position where he has either introduced one of his friends to their spouse or two people who end up striking up a major business deal. He’s often been the catalyst helping people find jobs, sales opportunities or partnerships.
Ben also still works part time at Zenware, Inc. where he deals with apps, software and web development for businesses. He has been working there for just over seven years now. Ellsworth’s boss at Zenware, Jody has taken the time to teach Ben a lot of what he knows. Ben describes how his mentor taught him that a lot of the things that are taught about sales are nonessential and how the three major components are timing, making yourself visible and being relevant. Timing is the only one that you don’t have any control over but as long as you build relationships and you create awareness of services, the third one will fall into place whenever the timing happens to be right. So if you get out there and let people know what your product is about, when the time comes that they’re going to need these services they’ll have already met you and will be able to contact you.
Ellsworth has been very active with the Ambassadors program with the Boise Metro Chamber in the past, having served as Vice President and President, as well as serving on the Ambassadors leadership team for five years. Lately Ellsworth has been spending more time attending networking events with the Chambers of Commerce in Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell.
Ben considers Tony Robbins to have been somewhat of an inspiration. While he doesn’t align with everything that Tony has to say and while Ben considers himself to be more spiritual than Tony, Ben thinks that he has some really good things to say.
When I met with Ben he had just recently celebrated 4 years together with his wife, Aubrey. Together they raise seven children, three from his wife’s first marriage and four from his first marriage. Although they only have the kids half the time, so either there’s seven kids running around and things are crazy or it’s just him and his wife and it’s totally quiet.
